So we came 6th overall, according to Laura. Partly this was because the Long distance event got triple points, and caused a bias in the results. load a shite if you ask me. It got me thinking though, am i right in saying that this type of points system caused a run of titles to be won by a University many years ago?
Pre 1999 every category in the long distance used to be counted the same as any other event in the varisities. Back in those days UCG used to clean up based on this bias. In '99 the scheme was changed to fix this and UCG scheduled a freshers weekend the same weekend as the varsities so they couldn't go (this was not a boycott cos they were in a huff...honest).
To be honest I think it makes sense to treat the long distance as one event with several categories that contribute to an overall event score. It's fairer and means that in order to do well in the whole competition your club has to be somewhat capable across more disciplines. But sure at this stage I'm just an auld fella giving out. You kiddies do what you want with your competition, if I'm ever eligible again somehow then I'll have an opinion.
Not only was each one counted as an event, there was no limit to the number of paddlers that counted towards your total. The more people you had in it, the more points you got. I can't remember the exact methods behind it now what with being an auld codger. This was another reason that UCG used to clean up, they had by far the largest club at the time and the most boats.

(I may get around to uploading them here - but I wouldn't hold my breath. Google have ruined Picassa so I can't get the quick upload working
)

PS: Not happy with that video quality - if anyone wants/needs the original let me know
Where are the drinking pictures? They're always a lot more entertaining
Those are reserved for the cool people of Facebook, obviously.

Drinking pictures? Why would there be such pictures of a group of highly disciplined well tuned athletes?
